Periwinkles are low-growing, fast-spreading plants that produce purple flowers the entire growing season.

Periwinkles generally grow prostrate along the ground and will root when the stems touch soil. Very useful as a ground cover or even to root a hillside to prevent excessive soil erosion.

Periwinkles grow best in full sun or partial shade and flowers in early spring. The flowers are shaped like pinwheels, which is indicative of its plant family, Apocynaceae.
